See our disclaimer Equate Omeprazole Magnesium Acid Reducer Tablets Treats frequent heartburn occurring 2 or more days a week Proton Pump Inhibitor Easy to swallow capsule Gluten-free Compare to the active ingredient in Prilosec OTC ® * What is heartburn and what are the symptoms? 3 Also known as acid indigestion, sour stomach or acid reflux, heartburn happens when acid from the stomach flows backwards up through the esophagus. Normally, a muscular valve at the end of esophagus keeps the acid in the stomach. When heartburn occurs the valve relaxes too often causing acid to reflux. Common symptoms are: Bitter or sour taste Uncomfortable burning feeling or pressure behind the chest that moves toward the neck and throat Symptoms often occur after meals Who gets heartburn? According to the American College of Gastroenterology, more than 60 million Americans experience heartburn monthly with some 15 million Americans having heartburn daily. 4 How can you prevent heartburn? 3,4 You can control your heartburn symptoms through these lifestyle and diet changes: Avoid specific foods and beverages that are associated with triggering heartburn such as chocolate, coffee, peppermint, greasy or spicy foods, tomato products, and alcoholic beverages Quit smoking and avoid second hand smoke Lose weight if you are too heavy and avoid wearing tight fitting clothing around your stomach Avoid eating 2-3 hours before sleeping Stay upright for 3 hours after a meal and avoid reclining or slouching when sitting Sleep on a slight angle by elevating the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches ADDITIONAL HEARTBURN INFORMATION Antacids should be used for immediate relief and occasional heartburn, whereas Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) such as Omeprazole are only for frequent heartburn and should NOT be used for immediate relief 4 Frequent heartburn may be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which you should consult a doctor 4 Untreated heartburn can lead to damage of the esophagus causing bleeding, ulcers, and scarring 3 Chronic untreated heartburn increases the risk of esophageal cancer 3 Adapted from Heartburn: A Global Perspective. http://patients.gi.org/files/2015/06/2015WDHD_Infographic_8.5x11_Final.png.
