Illustrated History of 18 Inch Gauge Steam Railways

9780860934998
Description
Study of the use of 18 inch gauge railways in Great Britain in railway works (such as the Crewe & Horwich Locomotive works), military lines (such as those at Chatham and Woolwich) and those for industrial users and large estates (such as Sand Hutton and John Knowles). These railways, although not as well known as their larger brethren, played an important role in the development of locomotive and rolling stock design. The Royal Arsenal railway, for example, was at it zenith during World War I the most extensive narrow gauge railway in England, with over 60 locomotives and 100 miles of permanent way. This book fills a significant gap in our understanding of British railway history. Includes detailed information on locomotives and rolling stock, as well as operation information and financial data. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos, line drawings and diagrams. 176 pages with index.
